and everyone enjoyed themselves! We'll see you next year at Warbirds Over Port Clinton. Labeled as a warbird rally, WOPC also had 3D planes and civilian giant scale birds flying. Everyone running the event put on one heck of a show, and coordinated with the full scale pilots for fly-by's throughout the day. I would highly recommend coming to Warbirds Over Port Clinton next year. The fly-in was advertised all over Port Clinton, so the crowds were rather large for this event on both days, and the Civil Air Patrol and volunteers did a great job directing traffic and parking. There were plenty of vendors setup, and some classic WWII Jeeps and a "Deuce and a Half". Sunday was a carbon copy of Saturday with a few 3D demos, some turbine action set to music, and a flight by Mike Barbee's giant T-34 Mentor. All the prop planes had no problem keeping within the flight box. The ones that did were making tight climbing turns at each end to avoid overshooting the boundaries. Although quite a lot of airspace was given to us, some of the faster turbines decided not to fly. The flight box was defined with spotters at each corner to warn the flight director if any model aircraft strayed too close to the active runway or flew over the t-hangars, and a 400-foot ceiling was given to keep separation between full-scale aircraft in the pattern. Aside from a few wing encounters with the runway marker lights and one belly up Corsair, there was almost no carnage to speak of during the entire event. 3D Hobby Shop team pilot Andrew Ritschel with his 108" Extra 300LT wowed the noon demo crowd along with Matt Kozub and his huge Aerotech Extra 260 with a ZDZ 210. A Tomahawk Design Futura performed multiple precision flights, but ended it's day with a flame out and gear-up belly landing in the grass. Saturday started off with overcast conditions and a moderate crosswind coming off Lake Erie nothing the big heavy scale aircraft and 3D pilots couldn't handle. Keller Field in Port Clinton, Ohio, and it went off without a hitch! As expected, warbirds dominated the event, but there were plenty of 3D pilots throwing down during the halftime shows, a peppering of smaller foamies that took to the skies, and one helicopter! This was the 2nd annual Warbirds fly-in at the Erie-Ottawa International Airport at Carl R. I just got back from the 2014 Warbirds Over Port Clinton fly-in and burned through a few memory cards worth of photos and video in the process.
